“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1:7
How many of us, when we “feel” fearful, think of it as a spiritual situation? We know the effects of fear create spiritual consequences in how we react to it but it seems like an emotion and it is. But this verse tells us the root is spiritual.
The good news is that the Lord has given us the ability to walk in victory! How many couples in our classes struggle in the beginning, keeping walls up from their spouse because they are fearful of getting hurt again? Maybe we don’t step out to give or pray for couples in all the ways we could because we are fearful we will do the wrong thing or our prayers don’t sound as powerful as the couple we are coaching with, or our spouses?
The enemy gets a lot of mileage with fear in any form.
God’s Word is our truth!! And verse seven says the Lord has not given this to us but He has given us a spirit of power and of love and of a sound mind.
There’s a lot that all of us could say about the words power and love but we felt led of the Lord to focus on the “sound mind” He has given to us.
What’s it mean to have a sound mind? In the Greek it means: safe thinking, good judgement, disciplined thought patterns, the ability to understand and make right decisions, self-control and self-discipline. That is an amazing definition of something all of us want for our lives and that we pray for the couples in our classes and our families.
So that leads us to a verse that gives us powerful insight about our minds.
“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” Romans 12:2
We need to protect our minds-guard what comes in.
We need to pray that also for those we minister to and love. Paul says when we don’t, we end up conforming (or going along with) ideas and concepts of the world. The most important thing we can do to protect our minds is to spend time with the Lord in prayer and His Word. His Word is alive!! And as we read and pray we need to always humble ourselves to allow Him to convict us of areas we have conformed in or are being tempted to. God has given us a safety net but we must use it, and we need to pray for all those we love and minister to, to be drawn also by the power of the Holy Spirit to walk with a sound mind.
It could be each of our prayer to the Lord this month to pray the above definition of a sound mind and the verses from His Word, and ask Him to establish and seal it in us and all those we pray for through the power of the Holy Spirit.
There is great power and synergism when we agree in prayer!
